Experience a Sip of Home with Gold Peak Coffee

August 11, 2014 By Autumn Rose Reo 1 Comment

Coffee time.  It’s not just a part of my morning routine.

When I look back at some of my most important moments – from business meetings, to catching up with friends, to the perfect ending to the the perfect meal, coffee has been a part of my memories. So when Georgia Coffee recently became  and expanded its offerings across the US, I was more than happy to experience another good moment!

Gold Peak Coffee #ad

However, I think my favorite coffee moment happens every Sunday. While the rest of my family sleeps in, I take the opportunity to just enjoy me time – with my brown furry blanket wrapped around me on the couch with a hot cup of coffee and a little CBS Sunday Morning. There’s just something wonderful about the quietness of our home, the sound of coffee dripping as it percolates and then the smell of the liquid gold right before I take that first sip. No matter how crazy the week has been, for that moment with my coffee is perfection. Just thinking about it I can smell the aroma.

That’s why I always take advantage of the opportunity to order a cup of  at whatever meal I’m enjoying. Even with the craziest of days, one cup of hot Gold Peak Coffee gives me that same “Sunday Morning” feeling of home and helps me to start or end the day with that warm, comforting feeling of home.

HomeisWheretheCoffeeIs#ad

It’s kinda like my brown furry blanket and makes me feel all good on the inside.

To get your own “sip of home,” click on the locator where you can find Gold Peak Coffee.  Available in light roast, dark roast, decaf and sustainable organic blends and made with 100% of the highest quality Arabica beans in every cup of Gold Peak Coffee, there’s the perfect taste just for you.

HOW DO YOU TAKE YOUR COFFEE?

Texas Rangers Score a Home Run with Limited Offering of S’mores Chocolate Pie

August 8, 2014 By Autumn Rose Reo Leave a Comment

Let’s be honest: this hasn’t be the best season for the Texas Rangers. (no more discussion, please.)

However, as a gal who lives in the hometown of the team AND lives so close to Globe Life Park she can hear the fireworks go off on Friday nights in the summer after each game, I still have faith that this year was just a time for them to rest from the last two winning seasons we’ve had. Or perhaps it’s because they’ve been eating this pie  and they’d rather be enjoying the gooey awesomeness of this S’mores Chocolate Pie while basking in some A/C.

TexasRangersS'moresChocolatePie

Who knows, but thankfully, we don’t have to make the choice between a game or pie. We get to eat pie while we watch the game!  In honor of National S’mores Day on August 10 (of course, there’s a day for s’mores!), Globe Life Park will be offering the pie at concessions for $8.50 at the Captain Morgan Club. Unfortunately, our boys are away on Sunday, but they are still nice enough to not let this delicious pie opportunity go to waste. We’ll all be able to get it  all week when they host the Rays (Monday-Thursday) and the Angels (Friday-Sunday.)

Smore_Globe-Like-Park

Now don’t say you don’t have a reason to excited about the game!

Let’s Get Straight About Invisalign

August 7, 2014 By Autumn Rose Reo 18 Comments

This is a sponsored post for Invisalign.

However, all thoughts and opinions are my own.  About a year ago I opened up about my “fun times” as a teenager with braces. (And yes, I shared yearbook photos!)

Thankfully, now as a mom, I am thankful that when it comes that time for my kids, I won’t have to put them through the same “rite of passage” thanks to and Invisalign Teen.

Developed by leading orthodontists to correct the most common teeth straightening issues – from severe cases to more minor, cosmetic adjustments, Invisalign clear aligners straighten teeth without traditional wires and brackets.

Invisalign compare to braces

However, I recently found out that you don’t have to wait as long as I did to get your teeth straightened!

Actually, The American Association of Orthodontics recommends taking children for their first orthodontic check-up no later than age 7 since your dentist can spot problems with emerging teeth and jaw growth early on, while the primary teeth are present.”

So rather than wait until the teen angst has really set in, your teen and preteen can opt for Invisalign Teen, without all that social awkwardness (you know, spinach in their teeth or the thought they might lock lips with another “brace face”) and those other “fun” issues that normally come from a major case of FOMO (fear of missing out) with .

I mean really, do you want your kiddo’s memories of high school to remind you of Joan Cusack in Sixteen Candles?

And for teens that play sports now with Invisalign Teen they don’t have to worry about mouth injuries due to impact with traditional braces and continue with their activities like cheerleading, musical instruments, acting and singing without interference.

Of course, if it seems too good to be true it probably is… I mean with enough cash you can make any teeth look good, right? Wrong again! Actually, Invisalign Teen is around the same and is covered by most dental insurance policies — up to 50% of the cost may be covered by insurance (and accepted under most FSA plans!)

While a course of treatment depends on each teen’s dental needs (normally around a year like regular braces) and just in case your kids are anything like mine, they’ll receive up to six FREE replacement aligners with the Invisalign Teen plan.

As affordable of around $99/per month (depending on your orthodontist), Invisalign Teen is a great way to avoid a lot of the issues that happen with being a teen. If only they could come up with a plan to fix all those other things that happen growing up!

Hey, at least they’ll have straight teeth and no one can call them “Braceface.”

When I was a teenager my little brother, along with every other boy in the world was a big fan of Pokemon. However, I didn’t know what it was other than a game and the hot toy for his 6-year-old birthday. It, along with the Power Rangers, I thought, were a memory of us growing up.

Then when my own little 6-year-old uttered the words “Pichachu” after watching a cartoon on YouTube that I might need to do a little homework since the enchanting world of Pokémon was back again for me a second time!

Messina Hof Grows to Grapevine with New Urban Winery in Fall 2014

August 5, 2014 By Autumn Rose Reo 2 Comments

Feet

My French manicure may still have a purple hue, but a return to the salon is completely worth the trade for my incredible evening trek to Messina Hof for the Moonlight Harvest kickoff 2014 on Friday, Aug. 1.

Wineglass

While I have enjoyed sipping wine in Napa Valley, Tuscany, and recently around Grapevine, I had never been to Messina Hof. Unfortunately I also had never had the privilege of stomping grapes, part of the evening’s agenda, as well as several other surprises in store for the media and special guests from Austin, Houston and DFW that met at the Bryan winery.

MessinaHofGrapes

I was in for more than a memorable evening, but actually history in the making for the winery that released its first vintage in 1983.

MHGrapevine

The Harvest Festival celebrated its 37th year with its traditional picking, blessing and stomping of the grapes, but this year with a very big announcement made by the family and Grapevine Mayor William D. Tate (seen below): Messina Hof is set to open its third location with an urban winery at the Wallis Hotel in historic Grapevine, Texas.

IMG_0029

The idea of unity flowed throughout the evening just like the relationship between the award-winning winery and a community dedicated to the future of Texas wines. With the rich wine heritage of Winemaker Paul Bonarrigo (see the adorable gentlemen with the undeniable style below) dating back six generations to Messina, Sicily and Merrill Bonarrigo’s family originating from Hof, Germany, together the couple has pioneered the Texas wine industry in creating premium wines of distinction and a landmark wine country destination.

PaulB

Enjoying a wine tasting on the way to the winery, upon arrival, we learned a little about the history of the vineyard and how to properly eye the “Big Kahuna” and select the right grapes for cutting from the vine.  Then all the guests took their turn stomping the cold, juicy fruit between their toes before being “breaking bread” for a delicious feast featuring wine, cheese, and some of the best mushroom soup rich with Messina Hof wine.

MessinaHof Vines

While we all have to wait for Messina Hof to come to town, you still have the rest of August to experience the Annual Harvest Festival at the Bryan winery each weekend in August and followed by the 2nd Annual Harvest Festival at the Fredericksburg winery the last weekend of August.

Grapes

The annual event celebrates the bounty of the vineyard, in a public harvest setting similar to European harvesting practices of centuries past. Patrons, friends and family near and far congregate in the pursuit of grape picking, stomping and wine tasting/dining. Eight specialty dinners punctuate these four weeks on the grounds of the winery and the only Four-Diamond resort in the Brazos Valley, the Villa Bed and Breakfast.

Why I Accepted the 30-Day Get Picky Challenge

August 4, 2014 By Autumn Rose Reo 6 Comments

Disclaimer: I was provided complimentary product and compensation to accept the  Fiber Choice© 30-Day Get Picky Challenge.

One morning a few months ago, I was going through our morning breakfast routine handing out my kids vitamins and fiber supplements, my son looked up at me inquisitively.

“Mom, why don’t you take vitamins?” he said, referring to both the vitamin and fiber.

Unfortunately, I didn’t have a good answer. I knew I should, but I just didn’t.

Vitamins had always been part of their AM schedule and recently, after a big issue with both child’s digestive systems, the pediatrician had reminded me about the importance of fiber as part of overall health to support and maintain the digestive tract, thus I had added fiber supplements to their regimen as well.

10445522_667106370048996_3363095150817380729_n

Considering I have written many press releases and articles in the name of health, I knew fiber was important, to our well-being, but wasn’t sure exactly how much.  Considering it is recommended by the American Dietetic Association that an adult get around 25-30 grams of fiber, most of us only get about 1/2 that!

And now realizing I couldn’t ask them to continue doing something I said to do, but didn’t do myself, from that point forward I began taking vitamins and fiber with them each morning.

I knew I was doing something more than just being a good example, but creating a healthier plan for myself.  And after a few weeks, I had begun to feel the results.

So when Fiber Choice© presented me with the 30-Day Get Picky Challenge, I was happy to accept. Along with the daily serving benefits of six grams of inulin, a soluble fiber found naturally in many fruits and vegetables, and  five great-tasting varieties available, I was ready to see what Fiber Choice© product was right for me. Taking the assessment available on the Fiber Choice© website, based on my health goals the Fiber Choice© Weight Management was recommended.

results_strawberry

In addition to providing the positive effects of fiber and antioxidants, Fiber Choice© Weight Management it designed to help curb cravings with chromium picolinate. Additionally, since it’s made in a strawberry flavored chewable form the size of a quarter, I don’t mind taking my supplements for the day!

I’m only a few days into taking my new Fiber Choice© Weight Management chewables, but I can’t wait to see what 30-days can do with a little help from Fiber Choice©.

Until then here’s Linda’s story about how Fiber Choice© Weight Management has made a change in her health.

Last summer I took my son on his first “road trip” to San Antonio and while we haven’t planned anything yet for 2014, I’m pretty sure next week sounds like the ideal opportunity to squeeze in a little “kidcation” before my son starts first grade.

During this special week, the city rolls out the red carpet for its youngest visitors, transforming into a citywide playground. Kidcation Week allows families to create lifelong memories and have one last summer hurrah!

Host Your Own Outdoor Movie Night with Starlight Productions

July 28, 2014 By Autumn Rose Reo 2 Comments

North Texas was blessed by Mother Nature a few weekends ago with a beautiful, perfect and mild 70-degree Saturday evening. It was absolute heaven to get to outside and enjoy the outdoors without drowning in your own sweat and being eaten by mosquitoes. With such a fabulously rare July evening, we wanted to take advantage of the summer’s delight with a fun outdoor evening under the sky.

So off to Roanoke we went.  I mean all good nights start with THE Babe’s Chicken, right?

HeySugar

If you haven’t ever made it to the first Babe’s Chicken, considered the best fried chicken EVER, you are missing out. Found in “The Unique Dining Capital of Texas” Roanoke, Texas, you can find a little bit of everything from BBQ straight from the grill to a slice of apple pie you’ll be drooling over after just one bite. But what’s on the list no matter what you ate for dinner? Hey, Sugar!

HeySugarInterior

In addition to being every kid’s fantasy and every adult’s memories, Hey Sugar is a candy shop, ice-cream parlor (serving Beth Marie’s), old-fashioned soda and homemade sweet treats destination. And for the summer, the sugar mecca invites everyone to its open lawn for a free outdoor movie! Families bring out their blankets and chairs and plant themselves in front of the “big screen” for a fun evening of music and movie memories. And we were in luck…tonight’s film du jour? The Little Mermaid – my princess’ favorite film!

People

Starlight Productions has partnered with Hey Sugar to create this perfect family weekend outdoor movies throughout the summer. Locally based Starlight Productions does everything to produce the perfect outdoor movie experience – the screen, the sound capabilities (they even can do surround sound!) and if you want, they can DJ music before the event as people are getting set up! The kids loved this part and couldn’t keep still! It really made that “waiting time” easier as we waited for the sun to go down and get ready for showtime!

From the Starlight Productions Facebook Page

From the Starlight Productions Facebook Page

While this was a fun event for the whole community, I’m now planning to do an outdoor movie for my daughter’s upcoming birthday! Since she’s such a fan of Ariel, we’re setting up some fun water activities, grilling with friends and family and watching The Little Mermaid for her “Under the Sea” themed-party. It should be lots of fun and super easy for me with Starlight Productions!

If you are looking to try out Starlight Productions outdoor movie fun, I highly suggest you check them out in Roanoke! They go everywhere you need them to in DFW, but Hey Sugar is such a free family fun experience. On August 2 & August 15 Hey Sugar and Starlight Productions will have another “Movie Under the Stars.” Check out Hey Sugar’s Facebook for more info!

Best Watermelon Recipes, Done Three Ways

July 24, 2014 By Autumn Rose Reo 2 Comments

That’s right, I bet you thought watermelon was just made to eat as a messy summer snack. Here’s three awesome watermelon recipes to make your summer even sweeter!

So to get us ready for cooking magic, I’ve a little music to get us in the mood. Remember this one? (If you can do the dance, give yourself two points.)

WatermelonLead

Now on with the show…here’s the clip from the segment with Chef Jackson and myself on Good Morning Texas showing a lot more than just watermelon recipes.

The most important step in cooking with watermelon is finding the right one. There’s nothing worse than a tough, underrippened or overrippened watermelon. So there’s a quick test.

1. It’s pretty. If it looks funny, it probably didn’t grow the right way and may have areas that aren’t ripe.
2. Its weight. A good watermelon is going to be full with water so therefore it should be heavy. If it’s not, then put it back.
2. Its dark spot. If there isn’t a nice dark brown spot where the watermelon rested on the ground, then you don’t want this watermelon.
3. Thump it. If it makes a thud or sound thick, then you don’t want it. You want it to sound hollow.

Now that we found the perfect watermelon, let’s get to it!

Of course, there’s a lot more to do than just eat watermelon and apparently crawl either. That’s right, there are festivals and events you can attend this weekend and next to pay homage to the humble, all-American watermelon.

Donald Johnson Seedless Watermelon Festival in Knox City
The festival began more than 30 years ago as a point of communal pride. By official decree of the Texas Legislature, Knox City was the Seedless Watermelon Capital of Texas, thanks to the crops of the late Donald Johnson.

It’s as vastly different as the landscape as Texas. Now I’m off to @burntbeanco - #sequin here we come with the rest of the state!

🚨 ACT NOW: Keep Public $$$ in Public Schools! 🚨

Click Here (takes less than one minute):
https://www.txpta.org/take-action

Tomorrow, March 11, the Texas House Committee on Public Education will hear HB 3. Let’s make it clear: Public money demands public accountability!

Texans have rejected vouchers since 1957—yet lawmakers are once again pushing them through with SB 2 and HB 3.

💰 Vouchers drain public school resources.
📉 They don’t improve student achievement.
❌ They aren’t about "parent choice"—private schools choose their students.
🏫 Texas parents already have school choice.

Governor Abbott is making vouchers a priority, but Texans are pushing back. Lawmakers are feeling the heat from voters who refuse to let public schools be undermined.

📲 Take 1 minute to make your voice heard NOW!

📷Jackson and Taylor are 2 of the 5.5 million reasons why Texas must keep public dollars in public schools. I was a product of public schools and had an amazing experience in a rural community with some of the best teachers. Change needs to happen, but taking away resources like these from schools is not especially when they ste already underfunded and our teachers’ morale is at an all time low. Communities work better together not when you separate them further apart.

While many of the animals sleep, DinoLumia and DinoVision: a Jurassic adventure comes out to play, along with tons of holiday light photo opps and winter fun experiences. Enjoy catching up through self-guided, self-paced walk-through and spend time together while taking photos, which is ideal if you don’t like the holiday overload! And don’t sleep on Santa here, as he has a certain twinkle in his eye the kids always seem to like to catch up with (mom was even able to get a shot.)

And for the even bigger kids over 21, Dallas Zoo: After Dark, goes wild on Thursday, Dec. 12, 6-9 PM with eats, treats and holiday drinks, live music, and games and other ways to get you in the holiday spirit!

WHERE TO CHRISTMAS IN DFW WITH TEENS // Classic Ch WHERE TO CHRISTMAS IN DFW WITH TEENS // Classic Christmas

🌲 Coca Cola Classic Christmas - Choctaw Stadium in Arlington
🗓️ Now through Dec. 29

Growing up @cocacola made the holidays magic, so when Coca Cola Classic rolled down the road, we had to go peek! Partnering with @enchantchristmas, the experience is part lights, part photo opps and for my kids mostly FOOD and overall a lot of fun - all washed down with (of course, a Coca Cola!)

What was also great was a little walk through memory lane with Coke Christmas moments throughout the years - cue the polar bears and 18 wheeler!

Experience:
🎅Market Square (definitely hit up the t-shirts - reading each one is half the fun)
🎅 Snow Tubing (always our favorite)Ice Skating (truth: we don’t skate, but it’s perfect people watching)
🎅 Interactive Light up Dance Floor
🎅 @cinemark Theatre with holiday movies
🎅 Coca-Cola Lounge - 21+ Cocktail experience (looked great to go with the girls)
🎅 Santa Landing

And of course, the Eatery! Eyes (and mouths) got big here with featured food from State Fair of Tex winners like The Drowning Tacos (SO GOOD we then ordered the Birria Tacos, too all cooked onsite and with all the sauce!)

It’s the real thing!

WHERE TO CHRISTMAS IN DFW WITH TEENS // Prairie Li WHERE TO CHRISTMAS IN DFW WITH TEENS // Prairie Lights

🎄 Prairie Lights, Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie
🗓️ Now through Dec. 31 (NYE) at 6 pm

Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without @prairielights- with a packed car with blankets, Santa hats, hot cocoa and coffee, and blasting holiday music while we sing them even louder.

A stunning two-mile drive through light park complete with a midway stop - The Holiday Village with carnival rides, amazing bites (corndogs, funnel cakes and more, oh my!) And this year we were surprised with a new light tunnel, reimagined walk-through forest and new displays, great photo opps, gifts, visit with Santa, a lighted strollable forest.  It’s perfectly timed for food, fun and a little time on foot!

PRO TIP: Go early, get tickets in advance and spring for the fast pass on the weekends and prime holiday times. And enjoy it and don’t try to rush it - enjoy it! That includes entry and the experience (so bathroom before you go, but thankfully there’s one at The Holiday Village and you get the corn dog.)

Named after Bangkok’s legendary road of entertainment of all kinds (Sukhumvit Soi 11), it seems fitting this newly imagined destination would find its home in Arlington’s Entertainment District. Anchoring the NEW @loewsarlington, @soycowboytx (also from @bbbutchers / @berghospitality) recently swung open the curtain this summer with an opening that made heads turn at every corner of this 12,000 sq. ft. of sexy space - with 3 unique bars, patio, viewable kitchen and dining room.

To call it a “Pan Asian restaurant” doesn’t do it justice with its rich menu of fresh sushi, dim sum, caviar, truffle, lobster, waygu (all things you don’t find in the home of the margarita machine and ballpark nachos.) And if you’re looking for entertainment, just take a peek into the expansive kitchen and watch your rolls or omakase be made. The cocktail menu is just as extravagant with everything from mezcal to Japanese whisky, you’re eyes will be just as happy as your lips upon your first sip.

While we experienced live music, fashion show and more as part of the opening, the cool smoke installation and the people-watching is definitely just part of the menu at Soy Cowboy you’ll have to explore.

Food Nerd Note: SoyCowboy is on the upcoming @dfwrestaurantweek menu for just $39, so it’s a steal to take your own trip on a budget. (Make your reservation.)
